Acetal is a semi-crystalline and rigid engineered thermoplastic that is widely used for building parts that demand stiffness, excellent dimensional stability, and low surface friction. Acetal is also referred to as polyoxymethylene (POM) and polyacetal and is available in homopolymer and copolymer compounds. The property of dimensional stability enables the plastic to maintain its original dimensions even upon exposure to high temperature and pressure. Delrin is the only thermoforming acetal resin in the world and we provide Delrin thermoforming services. Delrin sheets are heated to a certain temperature and molten plastic is made to assign a specific shape by pouring into molds. This technique is quite easy and requires no additional equipment or force.
Although copolymer and homopolymer grades possess several common properties, they differ in many ways.
This material exhibits excellent thermal properties across a broad temperature range from -40°C to 120°C. It exhibits high impact strength at low and room temperatures. It possesses nearly 10%-15% high tensile strength than copolymers. Better wear resistance, and good shock resistance are a few other properties that make it popular.
It has a low moisture absorption property, which makes it suitable for wet environments. It has a slightly lower level of crystallinity than homopolymer, and this helps improve its dimensional stability over homopolymers. It exhibits better chemical resistance on exposure to high pH solutions than homopolymer. This material possesses excellent shock resistance and compressive strength.
We regularly work with different copolymer and homopolymer grades of acetal. Both these grades have specific properties, which make them ideal for certain applications. In addition to these, we also work with a few other grades.
Delrin® resin or Delrin POM-H is the most popular acetal homopolymer developed by DuPont. Lubrication and wear resistance are two factors that make this grade ideal for applications that are often subjected to challenges. Delrin homopolymer is NSF, FDA, and USDA compliant. We generally use it for machining fittings, bushings, impellers, and several mechanical components.
We regularly work with acetal copolymer as a part of our acetal plastic fabrication services. It is generally considered for parts that are exposed to wear and tear, and high moisture. Tecaform® is the most popular acetal copolymer we work with.
This grade of acetal is well-known for its anti-static and wear-resistant as well as mechanical and chemical properties. This grade is commonly used for building parts that protect delicate electronics, business machines, and so on.
In glass filed acetals, glass fillers add stiffness to acetal. Unlike glass-reinforced versions, they do not add strength. We regularly machine this grade for general purpose applications. In Reinforced acetals, glass fibers add strength and stiffness to the parts. These grades are often chosen for applications that demand high strength and stiffness.
