ABS Fabrication

Ehren-Haus Industries provides high-quality ABS plastic machining and forming for industrial applications. We hold expertise in several ABS fabrication methods and pride ourselves on providing a quick turnaround without jeopardizing the quality of production.

What is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)?

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, commonly referred to as ABS, is a cost-effective engineering thermoplastic that offers environmental consideration as it is both post-industrial and post-consumer recyclable. Although it’s most often used for plastic sheet fabrication, ABS lends itself well to plastic machining, forming, and fabrication processes.

ABS is used in a vast majority of industries from automotive and boating to energy, food processing, healthcare equipment, retail, transportation, utilities, and even zoos. It offers tensile strength, chemical resistance, surface hardness, and flexibility allowing for the production of simple to complex parts. Because it has excellent electrical and insulating properties and is easily machined, thermoformed, vacuum formed, and bonded, ABS is a good choice for housings, panels, covers, medical dispensers, non-invasive devices, food processing components, displays, and much more.

What Sets Ehren-Haus Industries, Inc. Apart?

Even with today’s supply shortages affecting many industries, ABS is typically available in black and white and in a variety of thicknesses beginning as thin as .040”. For each project, our skilled operators carefully select the grade of ABS that best meets the performance needs associated with the end-use of the product while also considering the working environment to which it will be exposed. ABS is available in a “utility” grade (made from primarily regrind ABS material) as well as a virgin grade (no regrind). We emphasize sustainability in all of our products and therefore may even recommend a combination of regrind material with a virgin cap. Our state-of-the-art facility allows for various advanced processing and utilization of all ABS material grades with attention to quality and performance in the finished part.

What is Our Process?

We accept designs for your plastic parts in IGS, CAD, and DXF formats. We analyze and discuss the designs with you for clarity and suggest design changes in the initial stages. We will not begin building your prototype until we receive your final approval.

Custom ABS Plastic Sheet Fabrication Capabilities

Learn about the most common ABS plastic fabrication processes that we employ.

    Thermoforming

Thermoforming is a highly suitable method of ABS sheet fabrication. In this process, the ABS sheets are heated at a certain temperature to soften the material. Once the sheet becomes soft it is placed on a mold to take its form. In this process, sometimes, the ABS sheet takes the form of mold naturally without any external force. However, if the sheet thickness is more, then an external force is applied by using plunges, or mechanical presses.

    Vacuum Forming

Vacuum forming process is quite similar to thermoforming. In this process, the heated ABS sheet is placed on the mold or a mandrel or a fixture using vacuum pressure. This technique is highly suitable for making hollow objects from ABS material.

    CNC Machining

CNC plastic machining process certainly is one of the most precise manufacturing processes in plastic fabrication. We utilize it for ABS sheet fabrication too. By using this method, we are capable of manufacturing intricate ABS products in different shapes.

    Line Bending

We utilize heat bending or line bending for manufacturing plastic products like ABS tables, boxes, etc. In the heat bending, the heated ABS sheet is placed on the fixture and is bent along the angle to form another shape. On the other hand, in line bending, the sheets are often bent in specific angles like 90, 45, 60-degree angles over a strip heater.

    Routing

We offer mechanical or CNC routing for cutting, edge filleting, sheet corner filleting, curvature polishing, etc. We choose CNC routing, in general, to gain precision and dimensional stability while working with close tolerances in ABS plastic product manufacturing.

    Drape Forming

Drape forming is a process in which a heated ABS sheet is placed on a mandrel and then can be pressed or bent over it to take a shape without the use of vacuum pressure. We can fabricate the ABS sheets in hollow shapes or open-loop shapes using this technique.

    Secondary processes

Drilling, tapping, de-burring, adhesion and chemical bonding are all techniques and processes that we use to complet the parts or item to the requirements & specifications needed to achieve the end result.

    Benefits of ABS Fabrication

The material offers several benefits that reflect as ace factors in the fabrication techniques we opt for. The following are significant benefits of our ABS fabrication services.

    Versatility in Manufacturing Processes

ABS is quite a flexible material. It is one of the thermoplastics that are suitable for a wide range of plastic production or manufacturing processes. Due to its properties like quick moldability, strong molecular bonding, high-temperature tolerance, dimensional stability, etc, it is compatible with various manufacturing processes like heat bending, molding, casting, forming, etc.

    Suited for Tactical Plastic Production

Since ABS plastic offers high impact sustainability, temperature resistance, chemical and moisture resistance, high mechanical strength, etc, it can be used for tactical products for industries like military, aerospace, aircraft, etc. The product made of ABS can be used for applications under harsh environmental conditions.

    Long Terms Life-Cycle

The average life-cycle of ABS products is almost 20 to 35 years if manufactured with a suitable manufacturing technique. Therefore, even in the harsh environmental conditions, the durability of ABS plastic products is extremely high.

    Compatibility with Prototyping

ABS plastic makes an excellent material choice for rapid prototyping. It is commonly used for 3D printing prototyping. The molecular bonding force between the monomer molecules in ABS is quite strong. It also offers quite thermos-melting and rapid setting, therefore the speed of prototyping increases.

    100% Recyclability

ABS is 100% recyclable material. The used or scrap ABS can be easily recycled and used by mixing with a small quantity of virgin ABS material to retain its original properties.
